Anticipating the rising moon, I laid in my masses from memory and quickly adjusted my colors and values as the cool, yellowish moon rose in a green sky. It sent a shaft of light to complement the violet snow shadows and the warm orange light at my neighbor’s house. As the moon rose higher in the sky, the values of the land masses merged into one unit of mountains, trees and snow shadows. It turned into a three-value painting, plus the moon.
