Leap year—a long anticipated day. It’s been mild without snow. Last night we got two inches, but it melted fast. I started this painting differently. At noon, I painted the masses in semi-opaque paint with a neutral gray of three or four values. At 5:00, I left the studio and quickly applied color on the light sides of the objects. The neutral, relatively proper grays in the shadow sides took on the proper color relationship. Color in the light, neutral in the shadow. The color created a complementary vibration with the gray.
